Meet the artist Claire James

Claire, an illustrator from the South Wales Valleys, has spent many years developing a practice that explores the intersection of text and image as a way of reflecting on quiet, often overlooked moments of human experience. Working primarily with watercolour and dip pen and ink, she is drawn to the balance between control and spontaneity the fluid, unpredictable nature of paint contrasted with the deliberate, expressive quality of line.

Her work emerges from an interest in the idea that uncertainty and disorientation are not failures, but essential parts of personal growth. Handwritten text plays a central role within her compositions, acting as both narrative and anchor. It guides the viewer while remaining intimate and unpolished, like a private thought made visible. Alongside this, her illustrations introduce a sense of familiarity and stillness, encouraging moments of pause and reflection.

Claire’s practice is rooted in creating work that feels both accessible and contemplative. Through a combination of gentle humour, domestic imagery, and thoughtful text, she invites viewers to project their own experiences onto her pieces while offering a quiet sense of reassurance. Her work ultimately seeks to capture the resilience found in everyday life and the subtle, ongoing process of finding one’s way.
